چکیده

[1] Wavelength-dependent fractionation of various isotopomers in the photodissociation of N2O is studied. The absorption cross sections are calculated by a time-independent reflection principle, related to the Prakash et al. (2005) treatment but now with an inclusion of the NN stretching coordinate and both the 2A0 and 1A00 electronic excited states. The added 1A00 state is found to have little effect on both the absorption cross section and the fractionation. The improvements include more physical details in the photodissociation of N2O, while maintaining an advantage of a treatment in the work by Prakash et al. (2005) that was not computationally intensive. The present calculated fractionation, without a significant adjustable parameter, gives good agreement with experiments in the absorption cross section in the low-energy region, the important region for the experimentally observed isotopic fractionation.

Vertical profiles of nitrous oxide isotopomer fractionation measured in the stratosphere

We have measured the vertical profiles of several isotopomers of nitrous oxide, N2O, in the stratosphere by balloon-borne infrared remote sensing between 15 and 35 km. In particular we distinguish the individual profiles and relative enrichments of the positional isotopomers 15N14N16O and 14N15N16O for the first time. We find a distinct and reproducible relative enrichment of the isotopomers wh...

Three-isotope plot of fractionation in photolysis: a perturbation theoretical expression.

The slope of the three-isotope plot for the isotopomer fractionation by direct or nearly direct photodissociation is obtained using a perturbation theoretical analysis. This result, correct to first order in the mass difference, is the same as that for equilibrium chemical exchange reactions, a similarity unexpected a priori. A comparison is made with computational results for N2O photodissocia...

Wavelength dependence of isotope fractionation in N2O photolysis

In previous reports on isotopic fractionation in the ultraviolet photolysis of nitrous oxide (N2O) only enrichments of heavy isotopes in the remaining N2O fraction have been found. However, most direct photolysis experiments have been performed at wavelengths far from the absorption maximum at 182 nm. Here we present high-precision measurements of the 15N and 18O fractionation constants (ε) in ...

Fractionation of 14 N 15 N 16 O and 15 N 14 N 16 O During Photolysis at 213 nm

Motivated by Yung and Miller’s suggestion [1997] that N2O is isotopically fractionated during UV photolysis in the stratosphere, we have studied the photolysis rates of the NNO and NNO structural isotopomers. In this study, we follow the concentrations of these compounds with FTIR spectroscopy during photolysis at 213 nm. Our results show that, as Yung and Miller predicted, the photolysis rate ...

Photo-induced isotopic fractionation of stratospheric N2O

Context Abstract: N2O has been identi®ed in the Kyoto Protocol as one of the six greenhouse gases for which anthropogenic emissions should be regulated, however, regulation procedures may not be implemented until a wellde®ned N2O budget has been established. The measurement of N2O isotopic fractionation provides a potential means for constraining the global budget since biological and anthropog...
